GROWING HERBS INDOORS ? YES, IT’S POSSIBLE. Some herbs like borage and basil are annuals and Autumn signals the end of their life cycle. Some are hardy perennials (tarragon, beebalm…) then there are tender perennials, which can be brought indoors.
These are best grown in containers to avoid the choc of transplantation.
Bring them indoors about a month before the first frost (August 15 – September 15), before they get woody or slip into dormancy.
French tarragon and chives are two exceptions. They must absolutely “ experience winter ” before being brought indoors or they wont thrive. So wait till late November or early December.
Place containers in a cool, sunny place, away for heat sources. Keep soil slightly moist between watering. Apply little or no (organic) fertilizer (once a month at the most).
If insects are present, use a mild insecticidal soap.
Here are the plants to bring indoors : - dill – bush basil – basil spice ball - chervil - chives – lemon verbena - coriander – French tarragon - scented geranium – Spanish lavender – French lavender - Bay - marjoram - mints - parsley - rosemary
